Running in board for Watershoot Bay.

The running in bard has arrived from Dart Castings.

https://www.dartcastings.co.uk/

The superb casting- no flash evident and fitted together perfectly was given a coat of grey primer and a rough coat of grey to represent weathered concrete .

When dry the nameboard from Sankey Scenics was glued in place.

Some wait until The layout can be worked on after a couple of exhibitions.

Isle of Wight Southern Terrier.

The Isle of Wight project has aquired it's second loco- Number 10 Cowes.

This is the third loco for use on the layout which is, as yet, unnamed.

The plates have been supplied by Narrow Planet together with Fishbourne which will be the next conversion.

The track has been laid but I feel that it is too cramped so will be transferred to a pair of boards giving a 7ft scenic section together with a 2ft 6inch sector plate fiddle yard.

For once I have actually found a projected line which I will detail in future posts.

I have also found a couple of inexpensive Tri-ang Hornby ex Hull and Barnsley vans- the two of three- which have had outside framing added and painted Southern Railway freight stock brown. Transfers have been sourced from Modelmaster and Old Time Workshop.

Both are excellent but I wish OTW would print on a darker background as it is extremely difficult to identify individual items.

Lima powered 00 Gauge Mainline Class 42 Warship.

I found a Lima Warship chassis fitted with a Mainline body and the marriage is quite straightforward.

Firstly it was dismantled which identified that,  without major surgery, the cab detail couldn't be used with the Lima chassis.

A driver had been added which saved me painting another one. The cab moulding simply slides off a couple of lugs so is easily removed.

The removal of the lower skirt from the mainline body is aided by a moulded line and makes a snug fit.

To aid fitment a small countersunk screw has been fitted at the lower edge of the body securing it to the chassis.

A new identity was obtained from Rail-Tec,- D816 Eclipse in this case. Steves nameplates are superb and a complete set of transfers for the loco is supplied for the price of an etched pair of plates.

Some spare headcodes have been applied (probably wrong!). And yes the crests are wrong but I happen to like this combination and it's my railway etc etc.

Turning attention to the bogies, as luck would have it there was a review of replacement wheelsets from Peter's Spares. A set was obtained- did consider the Ultrascale products but as this is for use on a 7ft long layout felt to be un-necessary.

The trailing set is simply a slot in excercise whereas the driving bogie needs a wheel removed to fit.

Below is a comparison of the originals with the replacements- removes the adhesion tyres also!

Original set bottom and replacement top.

Certainly improves appearance.

00 Gauge Kilmersdon -Peckett 0-4-0T

Finally fitted the plates to the Peckett.

As usual they are from Narrow Planet and well worth the wait. They are in Peckett style.

Apart from a crew this one is complete and ready to join the S&D fleet.

They were mounted on L shaped plasicard first and then affixed to the footplate.

Slaters 0 gauge Palvan.

Some time has elapsed since I started the Palvan. I discovered that I had assembled the springs incorrectly so out with the knife and cut them off.

Unfortunately this meant that they were destroyed so a set of, incorrect, springs were fitted.

Luckily the van is still even without any rock so I seem to have got away with the engineering refinements (butchery)!

Next to tackle is the etched brake gear so I may be some time!

Railtec 4mm embossed numberplates.

The plates and crests have been applied to the Collet Goods and they are exceptional.

Fully legible and embossed even down to the fixing bolts these are the best I have ever had the pleasure to apply to one of my models.

Once the atmosphere is a little drier I will give them a waft of Testors Dulcote as recommended- glad I bought a batch!

Below are the cab and tender transfers plus the Railcar arriving at St Mewan.

St. Mewan Signal Box nameplate- 00 Gauge.

Just a couple of days ago I received the nameplate from Narrow Planet and it has already been fixed into place. It wasn't until I viewed the photo that I realised it is slightly wonky- new glasses to blame i'm afraid. Still, as it's secured with UHU glue it should be easy enough to refit.

009 GVT Station Nameplate.

I am undecided if this will be the stations name. I suppose that it should be Higher Mill as per the tramways title.

As I have several packs of Slaters lettering in various sizes it seems prudent to use them instead of more etched names, and I only want one this time..

Also I am unsure if such a small facility would have running in boards at each end of the platform.

Still plenty of time before this decision needs to be made as at present I am undecided if any of the layouts will be shown again.

009 GVT Locos- lining.

I have been experimenting with lining the GVT Tram engines with a view to a corporate image for the upcoming 009 layout.

BR Mixed Traffic lining seems to be an acceptable match but my application does leave something to be desired.

Still I will persevere with trying as each loco will be different due to the placing of name and makers plates!

Compare the Bachmann Baldwin with the tram loco- on second thoughts no don't!

OO Gauge LCUT Small Signal box.

This Western Region style signal box is just the right size for St Mewan.

The contents are excellently produced and easily assembled with Super Phatic glue from Delux Materials.

The name for the signal box- not perfect but will do for me. The laser cut parts have been spray painted with white undercoat making it easier

to assemble. Recommended kit.

Narrow Planet 3mm Scale numberplates.

I ordered these some time ago but knowing the quality I was going to receive then the 6-8 weeks lead time is not excessive.

And I wasn't disappointed- these are excellent and entirely legible by far the best 3mm plates I have experienced.

Easily parted from the carrier etch, a deft touch with a fine abrasive pad to remove the nub and secure in place with a couple of spots of superglue.

These are superb!

009 Heljan Lynton and Barnstable Locos.

These two, both named Taw have been trundling up and down the test track for some time with no problem- I must be lucky !

Thing is that they both have the same name.

The last time I bumped into 248 Developments I bought various nameplates. Two were Wizard and Witch.

This is the new identities of these two, I just have to get a pair of Manning Wardel makers plates from Narrow Planet to complete

By the way, the latest release by Heljan is above- recognised by the red smokebox lamp whilst the original release, on theleft has a black smokebox lamp.

Below are the pair side by side for comparison.

009 Mystery solved.

After some web searching I have found out what this little loco is.
It is a GEM Manyways kit which can be built in several different styles.
This one has now receivedits top coat and some yellow lining plus a name- Kalevala.
I have no idea where this comes from but was one set of several that I obtained from 247 Developments at Taunton.
When searching for the meaning I have found that the name Kalevala is a Finnish national epic of which, like the Illiad, grew out of oral tradition.

009 Kitbuilt Tallylyn Loco.

Another loco that has benefited from the attachment of nameplates is the GEM Dolgoch kit paired with a Neville Kent N Drive chassis.

This loco runs beautifully and now has it's own identity-Tallis.

OO Hornby Peckett named.

The second Peckett has now received a totally fictitious identity.

I found these plates on 247 Developments stand at Rail-Ex together with several others.

They are excellent quality and very easy to release from the etch.

Recommended!

Tomorrow is the Poole Exhibition

Narrow Planet B4 Smokebox numbers and shedplates

Dapol's ex-LSWR B4 is a real beauty so it deserves a decent set of smokebox plates.

So Narrow Planet is where I turn to when sourcing etched plates.

The set below arrived recently and they don't disappoint.

Quarry Sidings.

I have spent time searching a Thesaurus for an alternative to Quarry Siding but to no avail. No local locations were plausible so I have decided to stick with the original.
However, I have painted the fascia and added the name from my wooden lettering previously described that was purchased from The Works.
Shown is the bare layout as purchased.
I have been sourcing a short wheelbase tipper and other vehicles so that alternative periods can be substituted.

Wednesday, 25 April 2018

RAF Misirah lettering.

The lettering that I used on the lighting pelmet is shown on the left.
This was found in a branch of The Works at a most reasonable £4-bargain!
Six examples of each letter plus ampersand, all in upper case are supplied, so plenty for more layouts!

009 Saddle Tank.

This shows just how good the nameplates from Narrow Planet actually are.

Narrow Planet nameplates.

Having been away for a few days, it was a nice surprise when arriving  home, to find an envelope full of name and numberplates from Narrow Planet.
These I had ordered at The Ilton Narrow Gauge day in January. For custom made plates this is a decent timescale for delivery- the proofs having been received several weeks ago for approval.
I can't recommend Narrow Planet enough- it is well worth perusing their website.
