Slaters 0 Gauge 4 Wheeled Coach- Full Third Dia. S9.

Next on the build list is a coach- first one I have made in 0 Gauge.

Supplied with a 17 page instruction booklet plus a couple of sheets of historical data.

As suggested I am making the chassis first although work has been done on the body whilst waiting for chassis components to cure.

Below is how far I have progressed. This coach will be a nondescript Maroon for use on the next 0 gauge layout.

00 Gauge Railtec 3D Numberplate transfers.

The Railtec plates are slightly smaller than those that have been printed onto the loco.

A quick brush over with BR Green acrylic paint- slightly differing from that applied by Bachmann- prepared the surface for the transfers.

The transfers are floated from the backing, dried, then secured with a spot of varnish as directed in the instructions.

The smokebox number and shed plate are secured in the same way.

I brush a thin coat of varnish around the transfer edge and, to date, there have been no loss or lifting.

As the complete loco numbering set, and complete loco set, can be supplied there is no need to purchase separate packs of plates, shed plates.

Just need some suitable lamps to complete.

0 gauge BR ply sided Fruit Van.

A reasonable aquisition at the recent New Forest MRC exhibition was this av- it looked forlorn in Railfreight red and brown but has been re-incarnated as an early BR example. As usual Railtec Transfers have been used. Just the buffers to refit and some Sprat and Winkles et voila!

Once other projects are complete then another 0 Gauge layout is in planning- I have the points and just need a few more lengths of bullhead track and it can be started. Still have to think of a name for operation around Bath with S&DJR, Southern and GWR locos together with a bit of BR!

More 00 gauge goods stock including a van for Watershoot Bay.

At the recent Salisbury exhibition I was fortunate to buy a couple of Hornby 3 plank wagons extremely reasonably!

After a quick rub down they were painted into Southern Goods Stock Brown-Precision Paints version.

A search in the transfers box found some suitably sized decals and a couple of sets of spurious numbers.

A set of Gibson spoked wheels were fitted together with Sprat & Winkle couplings.

The Smallbrook Studio, with supplied Dapol chassis, Isle of Wight goods van has also been completed.

It has been numbered in the Southern Railway Goods van numbering range but i'm not sure if this is correct due to insufficient info to hand.

So, just the couplings to fit and another , unusual van is ready for Watershoot bay.

Just have to complete the layout!!

O Gauge Isle of Wight stock.

A rather fortuitous purchase has lead to goods stock for the Isle of Wight Terrier.

Whilst not being replicas of specific prototypes, they do capture the essence of pre-grouping stock.

Whether they will ever have an 0 gauge layout to run on is doubtful but once a suitable Brake Van has been found then Rule One will apply!

Meanwhile they join the expanding stock list with still several kits to start/complete.

0 Gauge Slaters 4 wheel all 3rd GWR Coach.

The hasn't been an item of Passenger Rolling stock in my 0 Gauge roster- until now!

because of an extremely advantageous price this kit arrived in the last few days.

The contents are very good considering the kit could have been made in 1988!

The bonus is a 17- yes 17- page instruction manual. A challenge for later in the year- perhaps!

0 gauge BR 16Ton Toad.

The transfers have arrived from Railtec and they are, as usual, superb.

https://www.railtec-models.com/index.php

After looking at and area where S&DJR, Southern and GWR could be found (just renewed modellers licence!). I also wanted a branded Toad to accompany my Minerva BR 57XX Pannier Tank.

Very pleased with the result, just needs Sprat and Winkles fitted and its ready for service.

Further news is that I now have sufficient 0 gauge points to construct a new 0 gauge layout. Slightly larger than Cringle Street Goods but still a manageable size.

0 gauge wagons for S&DJR.

Three wagons to add to the S&DJR fleet.

A couple of Dapol offerings, one 5 plank and a 7 plank. Although somewhat fanciful they were repaints- one poorly- which I already posessed so no need to purchase more.

The third is a Slaters Midland Van which has been re-branded.

All have spurious numbers gleaned from transfer sheets from previous builds.

All with Sprat & Winkle couplings.

0 Gauge 16Ton ex GWR Toad..

Slowly progressing with the PECO 16Ton BR Toad build- transfers have been ordered from Railtec.  Bits and pieces carried out so that once transfers are applied the whole can be varnished and roof fitted.

0 Gauge Dapol S&DJR 3F numbered.

That nice man at Railtec Transfers- also Steve- swiftly delivered the numbering transfers.

An exact match for the lettering on the loco as delivered so the loco is now complete.

The smokebox numbers are from a random transfer sheet and the lamp from Springside models.

I have fitted bars to front and back to facilitate coupling to Spratt and Winkle fitted goods stock.

0 gauge Midland Railway Brake Van for S&DJR.

Three of these Midland Railway Brake Vans were supplied to the Somerset and Dorset to replace ageing stock. They were absorbed back to the LMS after grouping.

This one will be branded as a S&DJR wagon to accompany the Jinty and wagons.

This kit is a Parkside by PECO offering and goes together well. However, the brake mechanism instruction is not particularly , to me, clear. However, help is at hand as the construction of this kit is covered in PECO'S Into to 0 Gauge bookazine.

Again handrails are brass wire formed to fit holes drilled where indentations are moulded.

Twelve holes each side and it is very easy to get the side handrails to bow if slightly too long!

0 gauge PECO AA3 Western Region Brake Van.

This is a Peco 0 Gauge 16Ton ex-GWR Brake Van under construction.

It is to accompany 5764 the Minerva 57XX Pannier Tank in BR early crest livery.

There is also a small rake of wagons in BR livery but, to date, no brake van was posessed.

Until now! The kit is straight forward to construct, parts fitting together well. Instructions are sparse but sufficient if time is taken.

The time consuming part, except for waiting for adhesive to dry, is the handrails.

17 holes have to be drilled out for half a millimetre wire to be fitted- then the wire has to be shaped to size.

The start of fitting shown here- not my finest but a used feel to them.

The effect is really quite pleasing after a coat of grey primer which will also be the finish.

The buffers , draw gear and glazing are still to be fitted. These will be added once the transfers are fitted and the whole varnished.

A location must be decided upon as the name can be obtained from Railtec.

A guard is also waiting for completion.

00 Gauge Dapol A1X Terrier Conversion.

By chance I aquired a Dapol Terrier at a very reasonable price. Usually these are fairly noisy but this one hadn't been  used. A good run in on the rolling road and it is really quiet.

I had a bunker conversion from Golden Arrow which is basically a resin casting that slides on to the existing body after removal of some plastic.

It fits really well needing the minimum of filling. This one will, hopefully be in Red which was one of the islands railway liveries before the grouping.

Ballasting Watershoot Bay.

The part I least enjoy as here it could all go badly wrong. This is one part of layout construction which needs time and patience!

The ballast, cream this time, was gently eased into place avoiding the immediate area around the points.

The sticks were added to keep the blades away from other rails- last thing you need is these stuck together.

Once satisfied with the loose ballast, I give the whole area a gentle mist- from an atomiser (remove smell of fragrance first) which contains water and a spot of washing up liquid. This

aids the spread of the adhesive. A mix of 50/50 water and PVA glue is mixed in a jar and again a spot of washing up liquid.

I use a cheap polythene pippette to apply the mix to the ballast- others use an eye dropper.

Once the whole area has been saturated with the glue mix it is time to wait for it all to dry thoroughly- don't try and cut corners now or it will all end in tears!

Once dry the missed areas and the points can carefully be ballasted. Small amounts at a time and lots of patience.

00 Gauge Smallbrook Studio van kit.

Once the pieces were glued together, handrails fitted  and weight added inside the van, the roof was affixed.

There are instructions that the roof plasticard supplied appears undersized but, in fact, the roof didn't overlap the sides and ends as is usual. Apparently rain channels were atop the sides and ends. There is supposed to be a groove in the end castings for the roof to sit in but it is somewhat inconspicuous!

However, a reasonable fist was made of fitting the roof but doesn't stand up to close scrutiny.

Once the paint has fully cured it will be time for transfers and then a coat of matt varnish.

00 Gauge Smallbrook Studio rebuilt LSWR Road Van.

An unexpected purchase from an auction site led to this kit landing on the front door mat.

The provenance is amply explained in the heading picture so I won't repeat.

The resin cast kit comes with a Dapol RTR chassis which requires a small amount of modification before assembly.

So far the mod's to the chassis have been carried out and one side and end glued together with superglue. A thin viscosity type is recommended so it penetrates the butt joints.

Completed bus for Watershoot Bay.

After stripping down the body was primed and undercoated before the finish of Maunsell Southern green was applied.

The chassis had a coat of satin black and the interior painted with a neutral light brown.

The roof is a light cream.

Once all dry transfers for Southern Vectis were applied together with a ficticious destination board.

Allowing time to set the whole was coated with matt varnish before the windows were refitted and the body reunited with the interior and chassis. Pleased with the result and another addition to Watershoot Bay.

A Southern Vectis bus for Watershoot Bay.

A reasonable purchase off of an auction site saw an EFE Bartons Leyland single decker delivered extremely promptly.

A few minutes with a pin vice saw the bus separated into numerous parts ready to change identity.

A quick brush over with a glass fibre brush was enough to key the surface for a covering of grey undercoat. Thence a coat of grey primer followed, when dry, by a coat of Southern Olive Green.
